DA takes back two Eldorado Park wards the PA won in 2021
JOHANNESBURG — The DA has reclaimed Johannesburg’s wards 17 and 18 from the Patriotic Alliance, reversing the PA’s 2021 victories in areas that include parts of Eldorado Park. The losses come as the PA faces a weaker provisional citywide result while keeping the possibility of coalition cooperation open.
The PA stood at about 1% of Johannesburg’s vote when 69% of voting districts had been counted on 6 November. That was below the almost 3% it secured in 2021, when it won eight council seats. The snapshot was provisional and should not be treated as the party’s final result.
PA deputy president Kenny Kunene defended his record as Johannesburg’s transport MMC, a position he obtained following coalition negotiations involving the ANC and EFF. Responding to concerns about potholes and faulty traffic lights, he argued that the problems reflected deeper infrastructure failures that he had previously raised with President Cyril Ramaphosa.
PA leader Gayton McKenzie accepted Johannesburg voters’ decision and indicated that the party remained willing to work with the DA despite their political differences. No agreement between the parties was announced in the report.
The ward victories strengthen the DA’s representation but do not, on their own, determine who will govern Johannesburg. Where no party holds a council majority, parties must assemble sufficient support to elect a mayor and sustain decisions on budgets and municipal policies. The final seat allocation will establish the negotiating strength of each party.
