JOHANNESBURG – The creator of Madiba, the African Opera, Unathi Mtirara has died.
A close family friend said he was rushed to hospital after he complained of chest pains on Friday night.
Funeral arrangements are underway.
His body is expected to be laid to rest in the Eastern Cape.
Mtirara is also Nelson Mandela’s great-nephew and a member of the Abathembu Royal Family.
He’ll be remembered for both the controversy and a historical legacy of the opera in Madiba’s name.
Mtirara is survived by his opera singer wife Nonhlanhla and his daughter.
