Courtois reveals the two goals behind his incredible Inter save
MADRID — Thibaut Courtois has revealed that one of his most spectacular saves for Real Madrid was shaped by two occasions when he failed to stop similar efforts, explaining that goals from Marcus Rashford and Lamine Yamal taught him how to react when Inter Milan threatened.
The Belgian goalkeeper produced a remarkable stop against Inter, denying a powerful close range attempt that appeared destined for goal and once again underlining his importance to Real Madrid.
But Courtois said the intervention was not simply a product of reflexes. He had recognised similarities with previous situations against Rashford and Barcelona star Yamal and deliberately adjusted his positioning.
“I learned from what happened against Rashford and Yamal,” Courtois said while explaining how those previous encounters influenced his decision making.
The admission offers a glimpse into the preparation behind saves that can appear almost impossible in real time. For an elite goalkeeper, Courtois suggested, being beaten can provide information that becomes useful the next time an opponent creates the same situation.
Against Inter, that experience mattered.
Courtois reacted quickly enough to keep the effort out and preserve Real Madrid’s position in the contest, producing another moment to add to a career filled with decisive performances in major European matches.
The 34 year old has built a reputation as one of football’s leading big game goalkeepers since joining Real Madrid from Chelsea in 2018. His performance in the 2022 Champions League final against Liverpool remains among the defining displays of his career, with Courtois making a series of saves as Madrid won their 14th European title.
His latest explanation, however, shows that even goalkeepers operating at that level continue building their game around moments when they get things wrong.
Rashford and Yamal may have beaten Courtois before, but when Inter presented him with another version of the same problem, the Real Madrid goalkeeper already knew what he wanted to do differently.
