On Monday, 28 October 2024, Nachy Britz, aged 29, was sentenced to fifteen years of direct imprisonment by the Brits Magistrate’s Court after being found guilty on two counts of fraud.
Between 2016 and 2018, Britz perpetrated a fraudulent scheme, deceiving unsuspecting individuals by presenting herself as a legitimate businesswoman engaged in the importation of luxury vehicles from the United States at competitive prices. The victims expressed interest in various vehicles that Britz showcased.
One victim remitted over R2.9 million to Britz for the importation of Ford Mustangs and Harley Davidson motorcycles. Additionally, another victim, who entered into a business partnership with her, disbursed over R800,000 for the importation of vehicles. An investigation has determined that Britz established multiple email accounts to communicate with the victims, providing them with updates regarding the importation of vehicles.
Following her failure to meet her commitments, the victims confronted her and requested the return of their funds. Britz was able to reimburse a portion of the complainants, who subsequently withdrew their charges against her. However, she has not repaid two victims, to whom she still owes R2.9 million and R800,000, respectively.
The Serious Commercial Crime Unit of the Hawks conducted an investigation that resulted in the arrest and successful prosecution of the accused individual. Following a series of court appearances, the accused was sentenced as follows: for count 1, she received a sentence of 15 years of imprisonment, and for count 2, she was also sentenced to 15 years of imprisonment.
The Court has ordered that these sentences will run concurrently. As a result, the accused will effectively serve a total of 15 years in prison. North West Hawks, Brigadier Silas Munzhedzi, along with the Director of Public Prosecutions in North West, Dr. Rachel Makhari, have expressed their approval of the recent sentencing.
