The Department of Home Affairs is set to revoke the identity documents and passports of former Miss South Africa contestant Chidimma Adetshina and her mother, Anabela Rungo, who is a Mozambican national. The duo now face potential fraud charges.
During a parliamentary briefing on Tuesday, the department confirmed it has concluded its investigation and submitted the findings to South Africa’s top crime investigation unit, the Hawks.
This investigation intensified after questions surfaced about Adetshina’s nationality and background upon her entry as a finalist in the Miss South Africa pageant.
Home Affairs officials attempted to locate Rungo at a residence listed in Adetshina’s name but have been unable to verify how she managed to leave South Africa to attend the Miss Universe Nigeria pageant, where her daughter won the title.
Photos on social media showed Rungo outside South Africa while the investigation was ongoing, but no details have emerged about Adetshina’s Nigerian-born father.
Albert Matsaung, acting Deputy Director General for Immigration, reported that authorities were unable to trace the passport Rungo used for travel between South Africa, Malawi, and Nigeria.
Meanwhile, Adetshina is reportedly traveling from the United States to Mexico to participate in the upcoming Miss Universe competition, as seen in recent social media updates.
