TEMBISA – The City of Ekurhuleni has set up a joint operational centre to assist people affected by a tornado that swept through part of the East Rand.
At least 400 people have been displaced by damage to shacks and houses in Winnie Mandela and Hospital View in Tembisa.
Extra security was deployed to Phumulani Mall amid fears of looting.
At least three people were injured after the roof of the mall caved in on Tuesday.
Officials say a tornado could have contributed to the roof collapsing.
A local hospital and garage were also affected.
Ambulances and other vehicles were severely damaged by the weather phenomenon at the Tembisa Hospital.
Emergency services were dispatched to help those affected by the adverse weather conditions.
“We have sent out teams to go around Tembisa to search, if ever there are communities affected by this storm,” said the EMPD’s William Tladi.
“So far, only one report is there are some other houses that are affected by no casualties, only roofs blown off.”
Many parts of the country have been affected by severe weather conditions and the SA Weather Service warns that this is set to continue.
