Police minister Bheki Cele says he is engaging Treasury for a bigger budget to ensure that more police can be employed.
Cele and members of the Hawks are briefing Parliament’s Police committee on several high profile cases such as the VBS bank, illegal mining and the series of bombs and bomb threats in KwaZulu-Natal.
MPs have asked Cele to put measures in place to make police stations safer.
This follows the various instances where police have been attacked and firearms stolen.
He says technology alone cannot solve the issues faced by South Africa. “You can have technology and everything but you can’t have robots policing. We have to look at increasing the number of police officers, says Cele.
