The City of Cape Town has called on residents to further reduce their water consumption as dam levels continue to decline, with storage now 19% lower than the same period last year.
Current dam storage stands at 57.2%, raising concerns about long-term supply as the city awaits the next seasonal rainfall cycle. Mayoral Committee Member for Water and Sanitation, Zahid Badroodien, noted that although water usage has decreased compared to the previous week, consumption remains 56 million litres per day above the target set to safeguard supply.
Badroodien cautioned that existing water reserves must last until winter rainfall replenishes the system, with forecasts indicating that seasonal rains may arrive later than usual this year.
Usage Still Above Allocation
The city remains concerned that overall consumption continues to exceed the allocation provided by the National Department of Water and Sanitation. Residential use accounts for the majority of the demand, with households currently consuming about 70% of the city’s total water allocation.
While officials have stressed that there is no immediate crisis, they have warned residents not to become complacent. Authorities are encouraging households and businesses to cut back on daily water use to avoid breaching supply limits and to help preserve reserves in the months ahead.
