The Transport Department says Cape Town International Airport must be named after a liberation icon who fought tirelessly against white supremacy and apartheid.
Several names are being considered, including the late former President Nelson Mandela, PAC founder Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe, and ANC veterans Albertina Sisulu and Winnie Madikizela-Mandela.
The process could be completed by the end of 2018.
Formerly known as DF Malan Aiport, it was named after the then prime minister under apartheid rule.
Marketing and Investment agency, Wesgro says the airport’s operations have grown substantially since the dawn of democracy.
“The last three years we added Nairobi; from the 16th of May we’re getting Khigali, Rwanda, Zimbwabwe Harare. In the next few years, there will be a lot of improvements and expansions; runway realigned, also domestic and international terminals both improved by 2021/22 we will have a fantastic international airport with the highest standard in the world,” says Wesgro Project Manager, Paul van den Brink.
