JOHANNESBURG — Athletics South Africa has removed president James Moloi following disciplinary findings over the misuse of federation funds, but still faces possible international suspension unless it implements wider governance reforms.

The board removed Moloi as president and board member with immediate effect on 20 October, accepting an independent disciplinary panel’s findings and recommended sanctions.

The panel, chaired by retired Judge President Basheer Waglay, found him guilty of unauthorised personal spending on ASA’s corporate credit card and receiving an R18,000 presidential allowance while continuing to use the card during the same month. Moloi denied the charges. These were internal disciplinary findings, rather than a criminal conviction.

World Athletics has instructed ASA to adopt a revised constitution within six months, followed by fresh elections within a further three months. A fact finding mission identified board divisions, uncertainty over officials’ authority and conflicts between national and provincial responsibilities.

The reforms must strengthen financial accountability, athlete representation, gender balance and term limits. Failure to comply could lead to sanctions, including suspension. No international ban has yet been imposed.

ASA has also paused recruitment of a permanent chief executive until the revised constitution and governance structures are in place. Acting chief executive Terrence Magogodela will remain in the position during that process.
