Arrest in Tsontso case as police recover property linked to runner
KEMPTON PARK — A suspect allegedly found with property belonging to murdered runner Elizabeth “Tsontso” Moselakgomo is expected to appear in court on Monday, giving investigators a new lead in the case. Police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe said the anticipated charge concerns possession of stolen property and that no murder charge had been brought against the suspect.
According to The Citizen, officers recovered an item allegedly belonging to the 38-year-old and arrested the person in connection with the property. The report did not identify the item or explain where it was recovered. The expected appearance is at the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court, while the investigation into Moselakgomo’s killing continues.
Reports on Monday differed over the number of arrests. An updated eNCA report said four suspects had been arrested over possession of property believed to belong to Moselakgomo. It carried an editor’s note saying the article had been clarified, after an earlier version described the arrests as connected to her murder. The Citizen’s report, quoting Mathe, referred to one suspect expected in court. The available accounts do not establish whether all four people face charges.
Moselakgomo disappeared on 9 September after leaving her Rhodesfield home for an afternoon run. Her body was discovered on 12 September and positively identified by her family at the Germiston mortuary two days later, ending a public search that had drawn widespread attention. She left behind an eight-year-old daughter.
Her death occurred as police investigated several women’s bodies found around Kempton Park and neighbouring areas. Police deployed specialised investigators to examine possible connections, but cautioned that similarities in the discoveries did not establish that a single perpetrator was responsible. The latest property-related arrest does not establish a connection between those cases.
For Moselakgomo’s family, the recovery provides a potential avenue for investigators to pursue, while responsibility for her death remains unresolved. The next confirmed development will be the court proceedings and any further police explanation of how the recovered property relates to the murder investigation.
