Joel Netshitenzhe

African National Congress (ANC) stalwart, Joel Netshitenzhe’s warning of serious consequences if corruption within the State and the ruling party is not addressed has once being brought to light. He gave the remarks when delivering a political report to the Concerned Umkhonto we Sizwe Millitary Veterans Association (MKMVA) National Council meeting in Johannesburg.

Netshitenzhe says corruption is at the root of the ANC’s declining support. He says if the ruling party does not have the courage to correct this, it will continue to lose support among South Africans.

“There’s an element of what the Greeks call Ubris – a defiance of the Gods which can only result in what the Greeks call Nemsis – self destruction. From the strange things that are happening in SARS, the Hawks, the NPA and so on, all these tell us that in my view the beneficiaries of corruption and State capture will not give up without a fight.”

The meeting follows growing concerns over former Public Protector Thuli Madonsela’s State of Capture report and the ANC’s loss of three metros in the August municipal elections.’

Joel also said the party should consider vetting candidates who occupy senior positions within the party for president. The advice comes as the succession race gains momentum ahead of next year’s elective conference. He also bemoaned corruption in government warning saying it may see the party suffering in the 2019 general elections.

Meanwhile, MK veteran, Siphiwe Nyanda, says they are concerned about the current state of the ANC.

“It’s very important that for the first time we consider what afflicts the ANC, because you know that we had the elections on August 3 where we lost significant support and many people stayed away from voting for the ANC – an organization of theirs.”
