Durban – African National Congress branch convener and eThekwini councillor Sipho Simiso Dlamini has been shot dead in a deadly ambush while travelling home in Umgababa, south of Durban, police confirmed.

Dlamini, was travelling with two community leaders late on Saturday night when unknown gunmen opened fire on their vehicle. He sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was declared dead at a nearby hospital. The two companions were injured; one required surgery for bullet fragments in the leg while the other suffered minor wounds and has since been discharged.

The KwaZulu-Natal Police Service said a murder case has been opened and detectives are investigating the ambush. Authorities have appealed to members of the public with information, including dashcam footage or sightings of suspicious vehicles in the area on the night of the attack, to come forward as the investigation continues.

Dlamini served as an ANC branch convener in Ward 67 and had been a longstanding figure in local politics, respected for his work in community development and service delivery. The ANC in eThekwini expressed shock and sadness at his death, condemning the attack and extending condolences to his family, colleagues and the community he served.

Political killings have been a persistent challenge in parts of KwaZulu-Natal, where councillors and party activists have repeatedly become targets of violence tied to local rivalries and internal disputes. Analysts say the pattern of attacks on public representatives heightens concerns about safety and democratic governance ahead of local elections.
