CAPE TOWN – Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga has been questioned about her political will to address the South African Democratic Teachers Union (Sadtu)’s alleged control over the system.
The issue was raised during her department’s meeting with the portfolio committee on progress made with the ‘Jobs for Cash’ report on Wednesday.
A ministerial task team investigated allegations that some Sadtumembers have been selling posts.
The Democratic Alliance (DA)’s shadow Minister of Basic Education, Gavin Davies, has asked how Motshekga plans on addressing what he claims is the capture of the education system by Sadtu.
“These cases that we’ve uncovered are not the end of the story, they’re symptoms of a cause and that cause is the dominance of Sadtu in our education system.”
Motshekga replied saying she felt as though Davies was questioning her morality.
“With due respect chair, to the committee, yourself and your members, I’ll really, humbly, appeal to members not to patronise us when we come in here.”
The report has recommended provincial education departments address cases where union representatives have exerted improper influence within the education system.
