CAPE TOWN – ANC Secretary General Gwede Mantashe says calls for the party’s senior leadership to step down don’t take the complexity of the situation into account.
This comes after ANC Parliamentary Chief Whip Jackson Mthembu’s calls for the National Executive Committee to resign.
Mantashe was speaking in Cape Town at a lecture commemorating the life of former ANC president OR Tambo.
The ANC Secretary General says the party is in crisis but it’s not the first, and won’t be the last time the ANC faces tough times.
“The question though that we must ask at all levels whether at branch, region, province or national are, what kind of leadership are we?
“Are personal interests the basis of our leadership? Can we elevate ourselves above the factions or are we subservient to them?”
He said there are no simple solutions to complex problems facing the ANC.
“These experiences must guide us,” he said.
Mantashe said many hold the ANC in high esteem and the party should do its best not to betray the legacy of OR Tambo.
