JOHANNESBURG – It’s the day of reckoning for the ANC as the party finds out whether or not it remains in charge of Johannesburg.
Party officials have been holding last-minute talks with opposition parties over possible coalitions.
The ANC failed to secure an outright majority in recent polls, managing only 44.64 percent of the vote.
The DA, which garnered 38.44 percent of the vote, is to nominate Herman Mashaba as mayoral candidate.
The EFF is unhappy with Mashaba but has promised to back the DA in stopping the ANC from governing in the Johannesburg metro.
ANC officials in Johannesburg admit the results of the 3 August elections placed the party on uncertain ground.
“We have been engaging with other political parties, and the starting point of our engagement with all political parties has been around our programme of social economic transformation, programme of reversing a city defined by inequality …so our bases of engagement has not been about give and take,” said ANC mayoral candidate Parks Tau.
The DA announced last Wednesday that it had partnered with five smaller parties — the Congress of the People (Cope), African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP), Freedom Front Plus (FF Plus), United Democratic Movement (UDM) and the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP), to establish governments in some of the 27 hung councils countrywide, a move that has guaranteed it the Nelson Mandela Bay metro and most likely Johannesburg too.
