What to check before you leave for your voting station today
MIDRAND — South Africans voting in the municipal elections on Wednesday, 4 November, can check two details before leaving home: their registered voting station and their sequence number on the voters’ roll. They must vote at their assigned station. The sequence number is optional, but giving it to an election official can help the official find their name more quickly. Voting hours are 7am to 9pm.
Voters can confirm their station with the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) on WhatsApp at 060 088 0000, by calling 0800 11 8000, or by sending an SMS to 32810 at a cost of R1. They must bring a smart ID card, a green barcoded ID book or a temporary identity certificate issued by Home Affairs.
Special voters who missed their slot can still vote
A total of 1,425,942 people voted during the two days of special voting that ended on Tuesday, SAnews reported. Registered voters who qualified for a special vote but could not cast it on either day can still vote at their assigned station on Wednesday.
IEC chairperson Mosotho Moepya said 29.2 million people were registered for this election across 23,696 voting stations. Briefing the media at the national results centre in Midrand on Tuesday, he said the commission had deployed 188,000 officials and distributed ballot papers and other essential materials across all nine provinces.
Inside the station, voters will receive two or three ballot papers, depending on their municipality. The IEC asks voters to mark one X beside their chosen candidate or party on each paper, in the privacy of the booth. Photographing a marked ballot is prohibited.
