Milan and Inter’s €2.3bn plan goes beyond replacing San Siro

MILAN — AC Milan and Inter plan to replace San Siro with a shared 71,500-seat ground and turn the surrounding district into a destination for residents and visitors on days when neither club is playing. The proposed Generali Stadium is the centrepiece of a redevelopment covering 281,000 square metres, with shops, leisure facilities, green areas and public spaces. Bloomberg puts the cost of the wider project at about €2.3 billion.

A shared ground with a new name

The Serie A rivals unveiled the design on 29 October and announced a naming rights partnership with Italian insurer Generali. Architects Foster + Partners and MANICA have given the stadium a distinctive external frame of intersecting supports and a roof that curves in two directions. The clubs say the design aims to preserve the atmosphere of the century-old San Siro.

For Milan owner RedBird and Inter owner Oaktree, the commercial opportunity extends beyond tickets to home fixtures. The naming rights deal gives the stadium a sponsor before construction begins, while the surrounding shops and leisure venues are intended to draw visitors throughout the year. Both clubs see that additional income as a way to strengthen their ability to compete on the pitch.

What happens to the old San Siro

The clubs acquired the existing stadium and surrounding site from the City of Milan in November 2025 through a company they jointly own. The municipal plan provides for partial demolition of the Giuseppe Meazza stadium, as San Siro is formally known. It also calls for the relocation of the nearby Patroclo road tunnel as part of the work to accommodate the new ground.

The city began its strategic environmental assessment process in March 2026. The clubs expect construction to start in 2028 and are targeting the 2031/32 season for the first match at Generali Stadium. That timetable still depends on design and planning approvals.
