Former radio host takes charge of government communications
PRETORIA — Milingoni Fhulufhelo Lloyd Nedohe, who began his broadcasting career at Radio Thohoyandou in Limpopo, took office on 1 November as director-general of the Government Communication and Information System (GCIS). The former Metro FM and Kaya FM presenter fills a post last held permanently by Phumla Williams, who retired in December 2022. Cabinet announced Nedohe’s appointment on 29 September.
From Radio Thohoyandou to the Cabinet briefing room
Nedohe joined Radio Thohoyandou in the mid-1980s and later worked at Phalaphala FM. At Kaya FM, he moved from the overnight shift to the midday slot. His career beyond broadcasting included roles at the Development Bank of Southern Africa, mining group BHP Billiton and Johannesburg’s Metropolitan Trading Company. He was also the founding editor of ESG Frontiers, a publication covering mining and energy.
As head of GCIS, Nedohe will serve as spokesperson for government and Cabinet. His responsibilities also extend beyond explaining Cabinet decisions to the national press. He will oversee how national departments, provinces and municipalities coordinate the information they give the public about policies, programmes and services.
Community media feature in his brief
In its announcement on Sunday, GCIS singled out community media as a priority for its new director-general. For a local newsroom covering a service delivery problem, that relationship can matter when a municipality and a provincial or national department each hold part of the answer.
GCIS also identified the rapid spread of false information and the need to strengthen public trust as challenges facing Nedohe. One practical measure of his tenure will be whether local journalists can obtain timely, consistent answers from the departments responsible for the services they cover.
