SIU follows a Bentley tip in hunt for 8 cars linked to Maumela

MIDRAND — An anonymous tip that a Bentley linked to businessman Hangwani Morgan Maumela was being kept at an associate’s property led the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) to a house converted into an office in Midrand on 30 October. Investigators found the premises empty and the Bentley was nowhere on the property. It is one of eight luxury cars a curator is still tracing in the Tembisa Hospital procurement investigation.

SIU spokesperson Selby Makgotho said a check on the property before the search showed that its owner’s details appeared in contract records linked to Maumela. That gave investigators a reason to follow the lead. The search did not establish whether the Bentley had ever been kept there or who last had it.

Fifteen vehicles in custody, eight still outstanding

The curator already has about 15 vehicles in custody under two court orders, Makgotho said on 31 October. Four Ferraris and three Porsches remain outstanding alongside the Bentley. The whistleblower’s report concerned the Bentley alone.

The curator’s search extends beyond vehicles registered in the respondents’ names. In October 2025, the Special Tribunal ordered those named in the proceedings to disclose under oath both the assets they own and those in which they hold a financial or other legal interest. The eight cars remain among the assets the curator is seeking to bring under court-ordered control.
