Infantino’s FIFA bid gains support from an unlikely quarter

SHARE

TOKYO — Gianni Infantino’s bid for another term as FIFA president has received a boost from a recent critic: Asian Football Confederation president Sheikh Salman bin Ibrahim Al Khalifa. His endorsement follows the AFC’s criticism of Infantino’s abandoned commercial investment plan, marking a significant shift as the FIFA chief dismisses suggestions that he should resign.

Infantino said he retained the support of the “vast, vast majority” of football ahead of the presidential election in March. He argued that FIFA’s democratic process required respect for the views of its 211 member associations.

Support returns after commercial dispute

The dispute centred on FIFA Forward Enterprise, a proposed vehicle for private investment linked to commercial rights associated with major competitions. The plan was withdrawn following opposition, and Infantino subsequently apologised to FIFA’s ruling council over its handling.

FIFA’s account of the Tokyo congress emphasised reconciliation, with Infantino thanking Sheikh Salman and Asian football delegates for their support. The endorsement strengthens his campaign, although national associations cast the votes and a confederation president’s position does not guarantee unanimity.

Jordan challenges the unity message

Jordan Football Association president Prince Ali bin Hussein challenged the presentation of Asian unity on 25 October, accusing Infantino of using the AFC congress to advance his election campaign. His criticism shows that the endorsement has not ended dissent within the region.

Infantino also retains strong backing in Africa, while European associations remain the main source of opposition. With each eligible national federation holding one vote, support beyond Europe is central to the electoral arithmetic.

Candidates have until 18 November to submit nominations. That deadline will establish whether dissatisfaction with Infantino’s leadership produces a formal electoral challenge.
