Minnie says she paid R1.5m for wedding as divorce drags on

JOHANNESBURG — Minnie Dlamini says she spent approximately R1.5 million of her own money on her 2017 wedding to Quinton Jones, excluding sponsorships, while their divorce remains unfinished more than four years after they announced their separation. Her account has brought renewed attention to the finances behind a celebration that became a television event.

The presenter discussed the wedding during an interview with Thando Thabethe on 947’s drive show. Reports of the conversation describe Dlamini as saying she personally covered the amount. When pressed about Jones’s contribution, she responded: “Next question.” IOL characterised her account as a claim that he contributed nothing, but the available reporting does not explain the couple’s full financial arrangements.

The sponsorship qualification is significant to understanding the figure. R1.5 million is the amount Dlamini says came from her pocket, rather than a verified total valuation of the wedding. It does not account for all sponsored goods or services, nor establish the financial terms of the television production that documented the celebrations.

Dlamini and Jones held a traditional ceremony in July 2017, followed by their white wedding at Lourensford Wine Estate in Somerset West that September. Their preparations and ceremonies featured in the three-part series Minnie Dlamini: Becoming Mrs Jones, giving viewers access to a milestone that had already attracted substantial public interest.

The couple announced their separation in February 2022 after nearly five years of marriage. At the time, they said the decision followed reflection, family consultations and counselling, and identified co-parenting their son as a priority. Dlamini’s latest interview indicates that the legal process has still not been finalised.

She also rejected reports that she was financially maintaining Jones. That denial concerns what she says she is paying; without court documents, it does not independently establish whether maintenance was requested, what arguments either party has advanced or what orders may exist. No response from Jones to the wedding-payment claim was available in the reports reviewed.

Dlamini subsequently shared an Instagram Stories repost reading: “Explaining myself is too much work, please just judge me,” according to The Citizen. Although the post followed the interview’s circulation, it did not expressly identify the wedding discussion as its subject and should not be treated as a detailed response to it.

Her remarks offer her version of the wedding expenditure while leaving the wider financial and divorce arrangements undisclosed. The proceedings remain unresolved according to Dlamini, and the reason for their duration cannot be established from the interview reports alone.
