Alleged stadium shutdown threat leads to arrest in Durban
DURBAN — KwaZulu-Natal police have arrested a man accused of threatening to shut down Moses Mabhida Stadium to prevent Saturday’s MTN8 final between Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns.
According to a police statement reported by SAnews, the suspect allegedly said he and his followers would stop the match from taking place. He had gathered a group at King Dinizulu Park in Durban to stage a march, but those accompanying him fled.
Police confirmed the man’s arrest and warned against threats to public stability. “Police are reiterating that anyone who threatens to cause instability will be dealt with in accordance with the law,” SAPS said.
The report did not identify the suspect, specify the charges against him or provide a court appearance date. It also did not explain the group’s grievances or establish whether anyone reached the stadium.
The alleged threat targeted a sold-out final at one of Durban’s major sporting venues. Before the match, Pirates had advised ticket holders to arrive early and confirmed that no tickets would be sold at the stadium.
The police account concerns an alleged attempt to prevent the fixture. It does not report that the group succeeded in disrupting the match. The suspect’s alleged conduct remains subject to the criminal justice process.
