Argument with strangers ends in kidnapping and murder arrest
BLOEMFONTEIN — Five people have been arrested after a 31-year-old man was allegedly forced into a vehicle following an argument in Bloemfontein and found dead hours later with multiple stab wounds.
The South African Police Service said the killing happened in Phase 7 in the early hours of Sunday after the victim had been drinking with friends when an argument broke out with a group of people they did not know.
Police allege that the group forced the man into a black vehicle before driving away with him.
At approximately 6am, the victim was discovered lying in a street in Phase 7 with multiple stab wounds to his face and deep wounds to his left cheek. A large rock and a small spanner were found close to his body, according to police.
Paramedics were called to the scene but declared the 31-year-old dead. His identity had not been released in the information provided by police on Monday.
Bloemspruit Detectives subsequently established a dedicated task team to investigate the kidnapping and killing and follow up on information that could identify those allegedly involved.
The investigation led police to five suspects aged between 21 and 34. SAPS did not disclose where the arrests were made or provide further information about what investigators believe happened between the alleged abduction and the discovery of the victim’s body.
Free State Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Thabang Solomon Lesia commended the detectives for making the arrests shortly after the killing.
“The swift apprehension of these suspects sends a clear message that we will not tolerate lawlessness or the brutalisation of our citizens,” Lesia said.
All five suspects are expected to appear in court on charges of kidnapping and murder.
The arrests place the circumstances surrounding the man’s final hours at the centre of the criminal investigation, including what caused the initial argument, where he was allegedly taken after being forced into the vehicle and how he came to be found fatally wounded in the street several hours later.
Police had not disclosed a possible motive for the killing by the time the arrests were announced. The allegations against the five suspects have also not been tested in court, and they remain presumed innocent unless convicted.
