Police officials confirmed that the bust took place on Friday after the SAPS Crime Intelligence Border Integrity Unit received information regarding a suspicious consignment. The operation was executed by the SAPS Visible Policing Unit in coordination with Customs officials and Menzies Aviation staff.

The illicit cargo arrived on a flight originating from São Paulo, Brazil. Law enforcement moved in at approximately 1pm to intercept the goods at the airport cargo section. Upon inspection, authorities discovered 95 kilograms of cocaine, which was immediately confiscated.

While the seizure marks a significant blow to international drug trafficking, no arrests have been made at this stage. Police investigators are currently analyzing flight manifests and cargo documentation to identify the individuals or syndicates responsible for the smuggling attempt.

The SAPS stated that it remains committed to disrupting organized criminal networks that exploit South Africa’s ports of entry. This latest bust highlights the ongoing challenges of narcotics smuggling via direct routes from South America, which remains a primary source for high-volume cocaine shipments entering the African continent.

Securing OR Tambo International Airport is a critical priority for national security as it serves as the busiest transport hub in Africa. Authorities have indicated that investigations are ongoing and that further cooperation with international policing agencies may be required to trace the originators of the shipment in Brazil.
