Free State Raids: 300+ Wanted Suspects Finally Caught?
BLOEMFONTEIN — The South African Police Service has apprehended 308 wanted suspects during a series of track and tracing raids conducted by detectives across the Free State. The arrests form part of the ongoing weekly Operation Shanela, a high-density strategy aimed at curbing serious crime and locating fugitives who have evaded the law.
According to an official statement released by the police, the raids targeted individuals linked to violent and contact crimes. Among those taken into custody are 22 suspects wanted in connection with rape cases and 10 individuals facing charges for other sexual offences. The operation also resulted in the arrest of seven suspects for murder and 11 for attempted murder, while 67 people were apprehended for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
In addition to the targeted raids, multidisciplinary forces conducted broader policing actions that led to a total of 1,015 arrests during the week. These operations involved over 5,350 high-visibility patrols and 13,227 stop-and-search procedures. The integrated teams, which included the Department of Home Affairs and the Department of Labour, also conducted 2,831 farm visits to ensure regulatory compliance and address rural safety concerns.
The crackdown extended to illegal substances and stolen property. SAPS confirmed the seizure of 703 grams of crystal meth, 59 mandrax tablets, and over 950 litres of alcoholic beverages. Officers also recovered 305 kilograms of suspected stolen copper cables, highlighting the ongoing battle against infrastructure vandalism in the province. Inspections were carried out at 645 licensed liquor premises and 56 scrapyards to enforce legal standards.
This massive deployment underscores the mounting pressure on the provincial justice system as hundreds of suspects prepare to appear in various courts shortly. The scale of the arrests highlights the volume of outstanding warrants that detectives are now processing through intensive intelligence-led tracing.
Police authorities have indicated that Operation Shanela will continue to unfold in identified crime hotspots throughout the Free State. This proactive approach is intended to disrupt criminal networks and provide a visible deterrent in areas of concern, with a specific focus on reducing the backlog of wanted persons.
