South Africa’s long awaited return to the FIFA World Cup is now just days away, with Bafana Bafana preparing to face tournament co-hosts Mexico in the opening match of the 2026 global showpiece at the iconic Estadio Azteca on Thursday evening.

Hugo Broos and his squad have settled into their base camp in Pachuca, Mexico, where preparations have intensified ahead of the highly anticipated Group A clash. However, the Belgian coach has made it clear that there is still work to be done despite the excitement surrounding South Africa’s first World Cup appearance in 16 years.

Bafana’s final warm up match ended in a 1-1 draw against Jamaica at Estadio Hidalgo on Saturday. Lyle Foster gave South Africa the lead before Dwayne Atkinson levelled matters for the Caribbean side.

While the result itself was not alarming, Broos was left disappointed by his team’s overall display. The veteran tactician believes his players fell short of the standards required to compete successfully on football’s biggest stage and has called for significant improvement before Thursday’s opener.

The coach admitted that he had expected the team to be further along in their preparations and highlighted both tactical and mental shortcomings that will need urgent attention in the coming days.

Interestingly, Jamaica coach Rudolph Speid felt South Africa were operating below full capacity during the friendly encounter. Speid suggested that some players may have been cautious ahead of the World Cup, avoiding unnecessary risks with the tournament now within touching distance.

He also warned Bafana about the challenge awaiting them in Mexico City, where a passionate home crowd is expected to create an intimidating atmosphere. With more than 100,000 supporters anticipated at Estadio Azteca, Mexico are expected to begin the match aggressively, pressing high up the field in search of an early breakthrough.

Broos Confident Players Will Handle Pressure

Despite the daunting task facing his side, Broos remains confident that his players are mentally prepared for the occasion.

The coach believes the experience of participating in the opening match of the World Cup will be special for a squad that has never played in an environment of such magnitude. However, he has stressed the importance of maintaining discipline and sticking to the game plan regardless of the noise and excitement generated by the home support.

Broos has repeatedly emphasised that the team carries the hopes of millions of South Africans and that the overwhelming support received during preparations has motivated the squad to represent the nation with pride.

Williams Urges Teammates To Focus On The Game

Captain Ronwen Williams shares his coach’s confidence.

The goalkeeper believes the key to success lies in embracing the occasion without becoming overwhelmed by it. Williams has encouraged his teammates to focus on the football rather than the spectacle surrounding the tournament opener.

According to the Bafana captain, South Africa must survive the opening stages of the match, particularly the first 15 minutes when Mexico are likely to feed off the energy of the crowd. If they can remain composed and avoid conceding early, Williams believes the team will be able to settle into their rhythm and play their natural game.

History Favours Mexico

South Africa will also have to overcome an unfavourable record against Mexico.

The two nations have met three times since South Africa’s return to international football in 1992, with Mexico winning two of those encounters.

Their first meeting came in 1993 when Mexico recorded a convincing 4-0 victory in an international friendly in Los Angeles. Seven years later, the North Americans defeated Bafana 4-2 during the US Cup in Dallas despite goals from Benni McCarthy and Thabo Mngomeni.

The most memorable encounter between the nations came at the 2010 FIFA World Cup, when South Africa and Mexico played to a 1-1 draw at Soccer City in Johannesburg. Siphiwe Tshabalala famously opened the scoring with one of the tournament’s most iconic goals before Mexico equalised through Rafael Márquez.

That result remains South Africa’s only positive outcome against El Tri.

Familiar Faces And New Talent

Bafana’s 26-man squad is heavily dominated by domestic talent, with 19 players currently plying their trade in the Betway Premiership.

Both Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns contribute eight players each, underlining their influence on the national team setup.

Foster, currently with Burnley FC, is the squad’s only England-based player, while exciting young defender Olwethu Makhanya represents Philadelphia Union in the United States.

The squad also includes experienced campaigners such as Williams, Themba Zwane and Teboho Mokoena alongside emerging stars like Relebohile Mofokeng and Jayden Adams.

Massive Opportunity Awaits

The clash presents Bafana Bafana with an opportunity to announce themselves on the global stage after a 16-year absence from the tournament.

Mexico, ranked 15th in the world, enter the match as favourites against a South African side currently ranked 60th. Under the guidance of experienced coach Javier Aguirre, the hosts will be eager to delight their supporters and start their campaign with maximum points.

For South Africa, however, the occasion represents more than just a football match. It is a chance to showcase the progress made under Broos and inspire a nation that has waited more than a decade and a half to see Bafana Bafana return to the sport’s grandest stage.

With the hopes of millions resting on their shoulders, Bafana will step onto the turf at Estadio Azteca on Thursday determined to prove they belong among the world’s elite.
