A distressing incident involving a learner at Thembalethu Primary School has sparked widespread outrage across South Africa, but it has also prompted an outpouring of generosity from members of the public.
The incident, in which a boy was allegedly humiliated after he could not afford to buy a pie at school, quickly went viral on social media. Many South Africans condemned the incident and called for action against the teacher involved.
Amid the public backlash, social media influencer Mandisi Tshingana stepped in to support the child and his family.
Using his online platform, which has more than 855,000 followers on Facebook, Tshingana launched a fundraising campaign aimed at assisting the learner. The initiative quickly gained traction, with donations pouring in from across the country.
Within a short period, the campaign had raised more than R55,000, transforming a moment of humiliation into an example of how social media can mobilise support and solidarity.
Meanwhile, school authorities confirmed that the teacher linked to the incident has been suspended pending an investigation.
Earlier, Western Cape Education Department spokesperson Bronagh Hammond described the situation as “totally inappropriate” and confirmed that an official probe had been launched.
According to Hammond, the video that circulated online had been shared within a parent group, reportedly to highlight that the learner was the only pupil excluded from receiving goods purchased during a fundraising initiative.
However, it was later established that the teacher had in fact purchased the fundraising item for the learner, who received it after the video had been recorded.
