RUSTENBURG — A multi-disciplinary police operation has resulted in the arrest of three suspects in connection with a deadly supermarket robbery and the murder of a security official in Rustenburg. The arrests followed a coordinated effort by the Rustenburg Detectives, Phokeng K9, Public Order Police, and the Criminal Record & Crime Scene Management units.
The arrests stem from an incident on Sunday, 29 January, when a group of armed men targeted a supermarket in Zendeling Street. During the robbery, a security officer who responded to the scene was shot and fatally wounded. The suspects fled the scene, prompting an intensive intelligence-driven investigation by North West provincial authorities.
The breakthrough in the case occurred when police traced the first suspect to a local hospital in Rustenburg. The individual had been admitted for treatment of a gunshot wound, believed to have been sustained during the initial confrontation at the supermarket. Following this lead, the tactical team extended their search to surrounding residential areas.
Two further suspects were apprehended during raids at properties in Ramochana and Sunrise Park. During the arrest in Ramochana, police discovered an unlicensed firearm with its serial number filed off. Officers also seized five cellular phones and 56 memory cards found in the suspect’s possession.
The three suspects, aged 23, 30, and 38, are facing serious charges including business robbery, murder, and the possession of an unlicensed firearm. They are scheduled to make their first appearance in the Rustenburg Magistrates’ Court to face these allegations.
North West Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena, praised the various units for their specialized cooperation in the matter. He noted that the tireless work of the detectives and K9 units was instrumental in ensuring the suspects were brought to book to face the full might of the law.
The incident highlights the ongoing risks faced by private security personnel responding to retail crimes in the province. The recovery of the altered firearm and electronic equipment suggests a potential link to broader criminal activities, which investigators are expected to pursue as the court proceedings begin.
