Emirates has resumed flights between the United Arab Emirates and South Africa, operating services on Thursday and Friday as efforts intensify to assist thousands of South Africans stranded in the Middle East.
More than 6,400 South African citizens remain stuck in the region amid escalating conflict that has led to widespread airspace restrictions. The Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) has urged those affected to evacuate using the limited flights currently available.
Governments around the world have been working urgently to organise evacuation flights for tens of thousands of citizens trapped in the Middle East. The situation has disrupted travel across the region, with much of the airspace closed due to the risk of missile attacks on aircraft.
DIRCO confirmed that the resumed Emirates flights from Dubai will arrive in both Johannesburg and Cape Town.
Meanwhile, Qatar Airways has begun organising and operating a limited number of relief flights to assist passengers impacted by the conflict and temporary airspace closures. The airline has advised travellers to wait for official flight confirmation before heading to the airport to avoid congestion and further disruption.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely as diplomatic missions assist citizens seeking safe routes home.
