The African National Congress has called on all nations involved in the escalating tensions in the Middle East to exercise maximum restraint as violence intensifies in the region.
Over the past three days, hostilities between Iran and Israel have escalated, with the United States also playing a significant role in the unfolding conflict. The exchange of airstrikes has marked a sharp deterioration in relations, raising fears of a broader regional war.
Amid the violence, Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has been killed. In response, Iran’s military has launched retaliatory strikes targeting American military bases in several countries across the region.
The conflict is now spilling beyond Iran and Israel, with explosions reported in a number of Gulf states. Iranian forces are believed to have deployed drones aimed at US military installations in Qatar, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates.
The ANC said the latest developments underscore the dangers of attempting to resolve disputes through military confrontation. The party emphasised that conflicts which threaten global peace require dialogue, sustained negotiations and a genuine commitment to coexistence.
The South African government has echoed these concerns, warning that continued missile exchanges risk further destabilising the region and heightening tensions internationally.
