Elukwatini, Mpumalanga — A 56-year-old teacher has been arrested and charged with murder and attempted murder following a Valentine’s Day shooting that left a 45-year-old woman dead and her 22-year-old daughter wounded.

Police said officers responded to reports of gunfire at a home in Elukwatini in the early hours of Saturday morning. Upon arrival, they found the 22-year-old daughter outside the residence with a gunshot wound to her foot. She was transported to hospital for treatment.

Inside the house, officers discovered the body of her mother, who had sustained a fatal gunshot wound. Paramedics declared her dead at the scene.

The suspect, believed to be the woman’s partner, was arrested at the property and a firearm was confiscated. He is expected to appear in the Albert Luthuli Magistrate’s Court on charges of murder and attempted murder.

Provincial police have condemned the incident, describing it as another tragic case of domestic violence. Investigations are ongoing.

“Valentine’s Day is meant to celebrate love. The irony of such violence occurring on that day is difficult to ignore. It serves as a stark reminder that love cannot exist where control, rage, and entitlement thrive” says Rali Monica.

She continues by saying “Communities, faith leaders, educators, policymakers, and families all have roles to play. Schools should not only educate academically but also promote emotional intelligence and conflict management. Men must be part of the solution, challenging harmful norms that equate dominance with strength. Government must ensure that protective mechanisms, reporting systems, and firearm regulations are effectively enforced. Most importantly, society must move beyond reactive outrage toward sustained, preventative action”.
