A devastating fire at a busy shopping complex in Karachi has left at least 21 people dead, with many others still unaccounted for as emergency crews continue search efforts. The blaze broke out on Saturday night at Gul Plaza, one of the city’s most frequented malls, prompting families to rush to the scene in search of missing relatives.
Rescue authorities confirmed on Monday that 21 bodies had been recovered so far, including that of a 25-year-old emergency worker. Around 30 people were taken to hospital with injuries. Officials warned that the number of casualties may rise as teams sift through the damaged building.
Outside the charred structure, anxious relatives waited for news. Some said they had not been able to reach missing family members since the fire erupted, despite repeated attempts to call their phones. Police in the southern district of Karachi reported having a list of around 60 people who were still missing.
Firefighters said the blaze had been contained, though the cause remains unknown. A government-appointed committee has begun an investigation to establish how the incident occurred and whether safety regulations were followed.
Gul Plaza, a three-storey mall with more than 1,200 shops, was a popular destination for wedding shopping and home décor items. In the aftermath, both families and shopkeepers expressed frustration at what they felt were delayed rescue efforts, calling for accountability as authorities continue their inquiries.
