Limpopo is facing severe flooding as heavy rainfall continues for a fifth day, leaving communities to deal with widespread destruction.
The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has raised its warning for parts of the province to a red level 10, the highest alert in the country, signalling extreme rainfall with a real risk to life.
President Cyril Ramaphosa visited Mbaula village outside Giyani, one of the hardest hit areas, to assess the damage with Premier Poppi Ramathuba, Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshaveni, and other senior officials.
During the visit, the president walked through the village and saw the impact of the relentless rain.
The flooding has already claimed lives, including that of a five year old boy, prompting Ramaphosa to offer condolences to affected families.
He assured residents that the government is actively collecting information on those missing or deceased and coordinating relief efforts for displaced communities.
After spending just over 15 minutes in the area, Ramaphosa left by helicopter as rain clouds continued to gather, leaving residents to face a difficult road to recovery.
