Johannesburg, South Africa — A Tembisa Hospital employee has been arrested as part of the Special Investigating Unit’s (SIU) ongoing probe into alleged corruption, fraud and maladministration at the Gauteng health facility.

According to the SIU, the employee was apprehended during a joint operation with the South African Police Service as investigators tighten their focus on irregular procurement deals, unlawful payments and the network of individuals suspected of benefiting from inflated contracts at the hospital. The arrest forms part of a broader investigation authorised under a presidential proclamation following widespread allegations of corruption linked to Tembisa Hospital’s supply chain.

The SIU said its probe has uncovered patterns of suspicious transactions, possible fraud schemes and links to companies that may have received state funds without delivering services. The employee is expected to face charges relating to the manipulation of procurement processes and potential involvement in financial misconduct.

Tembisa Hospital has been at the centre of public scrutiny since the 2022 assassination of whistle-blower Babita Deokaran, who had flagged questionable payments and irregular contracts at the institution shortly before her death. The SIU’s latest arrest signals continued efforts to unravel the network behind the alleged corruption and to pursue both internal and external stakeholders who may have played a role.

The arrested employee is scheduled to appear in court once formal charges are finalised. The SIU has indicated that more arrests are expected as the investigation progresses.
