The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has cautioned residents in several provinces to prepare for severe thunderstorms, heavy rainfall, and strong winds, issuing a yellow level 2 warning for parts of Gauteng, Mpumalanga, and Limpopo, as well as a more serious level 4 warning for KwaZulu-Natal.
The level 2 alert, which came into effect on Tuesday, 11 November 2025, from midday until 21:59, covers Gauteng, the escarpment and highveld areas of Mpumalanga, and the southwestern bushveld region of Limpopo.
SAWS said these areas are likely to experience isolated to scattered thunderstorms with heavy downpours, damaging winds, lightning, and hail. The conditions could result in localised flooding, property damage, and travel disruptions.
Potential impacts include flooding of low-lying areas and roads, damage to vehicles and infrastructure, and the obstruction of minor routes by fallen trees or hail.
KwaZulu-Natal faces a more intense weather threat, with a yellow level 4 warning in place until late Tuesday night as a deepening surface trough moves across the central interior. The province, particularly its western parts, can expect scattered to widespread thunderstorms accompanied by heavy rainfall, hail, and strong winds.
According to SAWS, these severe conditions could cause flooding of roads and settlements, hail damage to property, and dangerous fast-flowing water, posing significant risks to safety and mobility.
Residents across all affected provinces are urged to remain vigilant, avoid crossing flooded areas, and monitor official updates and emergency alerts for further information.
