The Fort Beaufort rugby community has been left in shock following the death of 34-year-old player Sive Tshaka, who was fatally stabbed in Keiskammahoek over the weekend.

According to reports, Tshaka was allegedly attempting to return money that had been taken by a relative when an argument broke out.

The confrontation reportedly escalated, leading to Tshaka being stabbed in the chest. He later succumbed to his injuries.

Known affectionately as “Richie McCaw” after the former All Blacks captain, Tshaka was a respected figure in Border rugby circles.

Over the years, he represented several teams, including Walter Sisulu University, Police, Lovedale, and most recently Fort Beaufort United.

His current club had been due to compete in the Border Brutten Cup semi-finals, which have now been postponed in the wake of his death.

Fort Beaufort United described Tshaka as a committed and charismatic player who brought energy both on and off the field.

The club said he was instrumental in their successful Eastern Cape Super 14 campaign earlier this year, where they reached the final in their debut season.

His leadership qualities saw him serve as stand-in captain in their recent Brutten Cup pool victory against Progress Rugby Club from Komani.

Tshaka’s teammates and coaches have remembered him as a strong character, admired for his authenticity, humour, and dedication to the sport.

He was celebrated not only for his performances on the field but also for his infectious personality and leadership in the changing room.

Police have since opened a case of murder. A 41-year-old suspect has been arrested and is expected to appear in the Keiskammahoek Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.
