Bafana Bafana Show Depth and Resilience in Crucial Win Over Lesotho

For years, Bafana Bafana’s lack of depth has been exposed whenever key players were absent, but on Friday night in Bloemfontein they dispelled that notion with a commanding 3–0 win over Lesotho in the 2026 FIFA World Cup African qualifiers.

Mohau Nkota, Lyle Foster and Oswin Appollis delivered the goals, but the defining story came from those stepping into unfamiliar roles. Mbekezeli Mbokazi and Thabo Moloisane formed an unexpected central defensive partnership, handling the pressure with composure to ensure Bafana finished with a clean sheet.

Zuko Mdunyelwa, introduced after Sydney Mobbie’s early injury, played with maturity on the right. In midfield, Sipho Mbule finally translated potential into impact, dictating play and providing creativity in the absence of Themba Zwane and Percy Tau.

Broos’ Strategy Bearing Fruit

Since taking charge, Hugo Broos has expanded the pool of trusted players, instilling discipline and fostering competition. South Africa can now rotate the squad without losing organisation or intensity, and for the first time in years, the team feels like more than just a first-choice eleven.

The build-up to the match was overshadowed by Lesotho’s threat to play under protest over Tebogo Mokoena’s eligibility, but the administrative tensions did not distract Bafana. Mokoena played the full match as South Africa maintained structure and composure throughout.

World Cup Dreams Within Reach

The victory extended South Africa’s lead at the top of Group C to five points, ahead of Benin who defeated Zimbabwe. Nigeria remains close behind, with a crucial clash looming on Tuesday.

Injuries to Mobbie and Moloisane are a concern, but the performance against Lesotho showed that the squad can absorb absences and still perform with confidence.

With 16 points from seven matches and momentum on their side, South Africa is closer than ever to returning to the World Cup for the first time since 2002. The team now possesses depth, belief and a clear identity, qualities that could prove decisive in the challenges ahead.
