South African drivers are set to benefit from a slight drop in fuel prices this week, as the Department of Petroleum and Mineral Resources announced reductions effective from midnight on Tuesday, 2 September.

Petrol will decrease by 4 cents per litre, while diesel prices will fall by up to 57 cents per litre. Illuminating paraffin will also see a decline of 42 cents per litre.

The adjustments come after a month of global market fluctuations. Rising output from OPEC+ and the lingering effects of renewed trade tensions have weighed on oil prices, dampening international demand. At the same time, the global diesel shortage is beginning to stabilise, helping prices recover.

South Africa’s currency has also remained relatively steady despite a recent 30% US tariff on local exports, trading between R17.50 and R17.80 to the dollar throughout August.

Analysts suggest that this resilience, combined with improved international diesel prices, contributed to the over-recovery that allowed for this month’s reductions.

Although the cuts are modest, they provide some relief for consumers and businesses grappling with rising costs.

Authorities, however, have cautioned that fuel price volatility may continue in the coming months, influenced by shifts in global economic and political conditions.
