Between Friday, 27 June and Sunday, 6 July, officials dealt with 162 motor vehicle accidents and 74 pedestrian-related incidents. The City warned these numbers may be even higher, as not all accidents are reported centrally, especially when no injuries are involved.

Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith, urged drivers to adapt to wet conditions, noting that even minor crashes cause emotional and financial distress and often result in major traffic disruptions.

In addition to emergency responses, Cape Town’s enforcement agencies made 183 arrests and issued over 26,000 notices for traffic and by-law violations during the same period.

Law Enforcement officers were responsible for 91 arrests and issued 3,276 notices, recovering four firearms across Tafelsig, Beacon Valley, and Crossroads.

Traffic Services recorded 21,188 offences, impounded 229 public transport vehicles, and executed 1,319 warrants. Arrests included 12 for drunk driving, one for reckless driving, and nine on other charges.

Metro Police officers made 70 arrests, issued 1,742 notices, and recovered drugs, a stolen car, and three imitation firearms. The City has once again appealed to all road users to exercise increased caution, especially during adverse winter weather.
