DA Files Corruption Charges Against Higher Education Minister

Tensions within South Africa’s Government of National Unity intensified this week after the Democratic Alliance (DA) laid criminal charges against Higher Education Minister Nobuhle Nkabane.

The DA, which is the second-largest party in the coalition, accused the minister of misleading Parliament in an attempt to conceal the alleged irregular appointment of individuals with links to the African National Congress (ANC) to key education boards.

The charges were filed at a Cape Town police station, marking a significant escalation in the internal conflict within the multi-party government.

The DA argued that the minister’s conduct constituted a criminal offence, further criticising what it described as ongoing corruption under President Cyril Ramaphosa’s leadership.

The unity government was established following the ANC’s loss of its parliamentary majority in the 2024 general elections.

Public frustration over corruption and poor governance contributed to the ANC’s decline, prompting the formation of a 10-party coalition aimed at restoring confidence in the country’s leadership.

While the coalition has been credited with providing some political stability, it has also faced internal disagreements, particularly from the DA. The latest dispute adds to growing concern over the coalition’s ability to function effectively.

This development comes shortly after President Ramaphosa dismissed a DA deputy minister over an unauthorised international trip.

In response, the DA announced its withdrawal from a national dialogue initiative launched by the president to address the country’s major challenges.

Speaking outside the police station, DA Member of Parliament Baxolile Nodada said the party had entered the unity government with a commitment to fighting corruption and promoting merit-based appointments in public service.

He added that the DA would continue to take action against what it perceives as unethical behaviour by ANC officials.

The situation has raised further uncertainty about the future of the coalition and whether it can overcome mounting political friction to maintain stability in government.
