South Africans were left frustrated as Eskom announced the return of loadshedding from 13 to 15 May 2025, with scheduled power cuts between 16:00 and 22:00 each day.

In a statement posted on its official X account (@Eskom_SA), the power utility explained that the decision was necessary to manage limited generation capacity and ensure supply stability during working hours.

The move follows the unexpected loss of 1,385MW in generating capacity due to unplanned breakdowns within the last 24 hours.

In addition, delays in restoring 3,120MW to the grid have further strained the system, bringing the total unavailable capacity to over 13,000MW.

Eskom noted that it is emerging from a period of intensive maintenance, leaving the grid vulnerable to sudden disruptions. However, the utility assured the public that it remains committed to providing reliable electricity.

“We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience. Our teams are working tirelessly to stabilise the system and reinforce the grid through ongoing structural improvements across the generation fleet,” the statement read.

Eskom CEO Dan Marokane echoed this commitment, emphasising that the state-owned entity is determined to build on recent progress.

He said efforts are underway to strengthen accountability, tighten oversight, and hold service providers to higher performance standards.

Marokane also highlighted that Eskom’s generation capacity has shown improvement heading into the winter months.

Previously, Stage 2 loadshedding was implemented on 24 April, sparking speculation among the public that the return of power cuts was linked to Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana’s decision to scrap the proposed VAT increase. However, Eskom has not confirmed any such connection.
