Kaizer Chiefs were crowned 2024/25 Nedbank Cup champions after edging out fierce Soweto rivals Orlando Pirates 2-1 in a thrilling final at Durban’s Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday.
The victory not only secured coveted silverware for Amakhosi but also ended a decade-long trophy drought, igniting jubilant celebrations among their loyal supporters.
The match began at a blistering pace, with Chiefs seizing the lead in the 10th minute after Deano van Rooyen brought down Pule Mmodi inside the box.
Uruguayan midfielder Gastón Sirino confidently converted the penalty, placing the ball into the bottom corner.
Pirates responded quickly, equalising just seven minutes later. Evidence Makgopa, in excellent form, rose above the defenders to head in a precise free-kick from Namibian winger Deon Hotto, bringing the Buccaneers level and igniting the atmosphere in the packed stadium of over 55,000 fans.
Despite the early setback, Pirates soon settled into the game and controlled much of the first half, nearly going ahead when Mohau Nkota’s low-driven effort was superbly kept out by Chiefs goalkeeper Brandon Petersen, who was handed a rare start ahead of Bruce Bvuma.
Chiefs’ Tactical Shift Pays Off in Second-Half
Chiefs responded with tactical changes, bringing on Mduduzi Shabalala and Ashley Du Preez, who injected fresh energy into their attack.
The Glamour Boys came close to reclaiming the lead when Mmodi’s first-time shot struck the upright.
Their breakthrough came in the 80th minute when Du Preez pulled the ball back across the box, and captain Yusuf Maart finished with a stunning left-footed volley to put them back in the lead.
Pirates pushed relentlessly for an equaliser in the dying moments, with Kabelo Dlamini’s curling free-kick testing goalkeeper Brandon Petersen, but Chiefs’ defence held strong to secure the win.
Celebrations Erupt as Chiefs End 10-Year Trophy Drought
The win marks a historic moment for the Amakhosi and secures their place in next season’s CAF Confederation Cup.
Jubilant fans celebrated in the stadium, on the beachfront, and in public viewing areas across the Durban CBD, marking a historic moment for the club and its supporters.
