Mcebisi Jonas Named South Africa’s Special Envoy to the United States
Mcebisi Jonas has been appointed as South Africa’s new Special Envoy to the United States, following the recent dismissal of Ebrahim Rasool from the role.
The Presidency confirmed the appointment on Monday, noting Jonas’ prior service as one of four Presidential Investment Envoys appointed in 2018 to drive investment into South Africa.
With a background as Deputy Finance Minister, Jonas brings significant experience in governance and economic policy to his new diplomatic position.
He will continue to serve as the Independent Non-Executive Chairman of MTN Group, a role he will hold alongside his new responsibilities. His appointment is seen as a continuation of his longstanding contribution to national development and international economic engagement.
The decision reflects South Africa’s intention to reinforce its historical and strategic relationship with the United States, based on mutual respect, recognition of sovereignty, and shared benefits for both nations.
