The man arrested in connection with the Zanzou night club assault incident in Pretoria has been granted bail set at R10,000.
The Congolese national was taken into custody in March after videos emerged online, showing young men being sexually assaulted by security personnel at the club.
During the bail hearing, the State opposed the application, arguing that the accused posed a flight risk.
This was based on the fact that he had entered South Africa without valid travel documents and only sought asylum after arriving in the country.
However, Magistrate Ernest Mbembele ruled against the State’s arguments, including its claim that the accused had previously expressed fears for his safety.
The accused is expected to be released once bail is paid and is scheduled to appear in court again in May.
