Police in Sea Point, Western Cape, are investigating a case of reckless and negligent driving following a high-speed crash involving a McLaren sports car.

Footage of the Saturday morning accident, which has since gone viral, shows the McLaren speeding through a suburban street before crashing.

Reports indicate the vehicle was travelling at an estimated 200 km/h on the quiet residential road.

The video has sparked widespread backlash, with many social media users demanding that the driver be held accountable and calling for stricter road safety measures.

Despite the criticism, the driver of the luxury vehicle has denied responsibility for the crash.

According to Peter Flentov of the Atlantic Seaboard Community Forum, the incident occurred around 6:30 a.m. on High Level Road in the Sea Point and Fresnaye area.

“A McLaren 570S coupe was driving at high speed along High Level Road in the Sea Point, Fresnaye area, and hit part of the pavement. The car then hit the boundary wall of a property,” he said.

The driver, a musician and content creator, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to hospital for treatment.

His passenger, who was reportedly not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, also suffered injuries and remains in hospital.

Following the incident, the driver addressed the public via his Instagram stories, claiming that the viral video misrepresented the full events leading up to the crash.

“There is a lot of misunderstanding in that two second video. Why post when I crashed out but not where I was avoiding hitting the homeless beggar at the traffic and the other driver on the wrong side of the road on the freeway.” he wrote.

He also dismissed the backlash, saying, “I get it’s a media thing, but no yawa (no problem). Y’all can never make me look bad! My people know me.”

Additionally, he urged the public to pray for his passenger, expressing remorse over the situation.

“Please pray for my brother too. I feel so sad. He does not deserve this. We were together in the hospital, and he is still there.”
