Gauteng and several other provinces are set to experience rainy and stormy weather this weekend following a stretch of warm and sunny conditions.
The South African Weather Service has issued a yellow level two warning for severe thunderstorms in the Northern Cape, Free State, North West, Gauteng, Mpumalanga, and Limpopo. In addition, warnings for extreme fire danger have been issued for parts of the Western Cape and Northern Cape.
Severe thunderstorms are expected in Gauteng as temperatures drop to the low twenties. Affected areas include the eastern parts of the Northern Cape, the western and southern regions of the Free State, the eastern and southwestern parts of North West, most areas of Gauteng, the northwestern parts of Mpumalanga, and the south-central regions of Limpopo.
On Friday, Pretoria is forecasted to reach a high of 27 degrees Celsius with overcast conditions, while Johannesburg is expected to peak at 25 degrees Celsius with a 30 percent chance of rain. Thundershowers are likely over the weekend, with a 60 percent chance of rain predicted for both Johannesburg and Pretoria on Saturday and Sunday.
The weather service has also warned of a significant temperature drop in Gauteng from Saturday into the new week. While only a slight chance of rain is expected next week, cool temperatures and overcast conditions will persist.
