National Treasury has announced that the embargo on budget documents provided to selected media representatives and economists during the budget lock-up, originally intended to last until Minister Enoch Godongwana’s Budget Speech on 19 February 2025, has been lifted. Consequently, reporting on these documents is now permitted.
However, Treasury clarified in a statement that its officials will not offer comments or answer inquiries regarding these budget documents, initially scheduled for release on 19 February 2025.
This update follows Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana’s recent media briefing, where he confirmed the postponement of the tabling of the 2025/26 annual budget from 19 February to 12 March 2025.
Minister Godongwana was originally expected to detail the government’s financial, economic, and social commitments for the forthcoming period during his 2025 Budget Speech in the National Assembly at 2 pm.
“The close-out period, initially expected to conclude on 19 February 2025, has been extended until 12 March 2025, aligning with National Treasury’s investor engagement strategy,” Treasury stated.
Treasury further indicated that during this extended period, senior officials will not be available, as they will be focused on finalizing preparations for the publication of the 2025 budget.
In a separate statement, President Cyril Ramaphosa emphasized that ongoing Cabinet discussions regarding the 2025 Budget aim to produce outcomes that safeguard vulnerable citizens and establish a solid foundation for sustained economic growth.
