President Cyril Ramaphosa has called for an increase in Nigerian products on South African shelves and urged stronger investment ties between the two nations.
Speaking at the South Africa-Nigeria Bi-National Commission in Parliament on Tuesday, Ramaphosa emphasised the shared “purpose and vision” between South Africa and Nigeria, stressing the importance of deepening economic collaboration.
Joined by Nigerian President Bola Tinubu, Ramaphosa highlighted the significance of the two countries working closely to enhance their economic partnership.
The Bi-National Commission coincides with the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations, established in February 1994, marking a pivotal moment for both nations.
Ramaphosa expressed a desire for greater Nigerian investment in South Africa, stating, “We look forward to seeing more Nigerian companies investing in South Africa. In fact, we want to see more Nigerian products on the shelves of South African shops.”
President Tinubu echoed these sentiments, reflecting on Nigeria’s long-standing support for South Africa, particularly during the struggle against apartheid.
“We are proud to be our brother’s keeper, and South Africa is a serious brother during such a critical time,” Tinubu said.
However, Tinubu cautioned that the numerous Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) between the two nations would remain ineffective without proper implementation, emphasising the need for action to solidify their partnership.
