Energy Minister Kgosientho Ramokgopa has called on illegal electricity users to become compliant with the new system before 13 December.
During an update on the Key Revision Number (KRN) prepaid meters programme on Wednesday, Ramokgopa revealed that most of the 1.7 million customers still needing to switch to the new system are bypassing the tariff system to illegally consume electricity.
The minister emphasised that those who come forward voluntarily will face fines of up to R6,000, which can be paid off over 12 months.
He also mentioned that individuals who come forward after the 24th can still regularise their status by admitting to tampering, in exchange for tamper fines.
Ramokgopa highlighted the economic impact of illegal electricity usage, stating that it costs the country R2 million per month.
